English to Spanish, the way people actually talk

Real SonicMeet captions from our tests: casual speech, English as a second language, big numbers.

Casual speech

Vamos a aplazar la revisión hasta la semana que viene. We're gonna push the review to next week.

“Gonna” was no problem, and “push the review” came out as what it means here: “aplazar”.

English as a second language

Lo hablaremos en la próxima reunión.We will discuss it in the next reunion.

Spanish, French and Portuguese speakers often say “reunion” for a meeting. The caption lands on what they meant.

Big numbers

El acuerdo vale 1.5 mil millones de dólares. The deal is worth 1.5 billion dollars.

“Billion” became “mil millones”, not “billón”. The decimal point is written the Mexican way; Spain and Argentina use a comma (1,5).

Formal or casual “you”

¿Podrías revisarlo hoy?Could you review it today?

English has one “you”, so the caption picks. Here it chose “tú”, which doesn’t mean the speaker is being casual with you.

Names, product jargon and rare words can still slip. Every caption keeps the English underneath, so you can check it at a glance.

Questions about the English to Spanish voice translator

Is this English to Spanish translator free?

Yes for 2 minutes on this page, no sign-up. SonicMeet itself needs a Google sign-in: new accounts get 20 minutes free, one time, and paid plans start at $10 a month.

Does it speak the Spanish out loud?

No. It shows the Spanish as text on your screen, with the English in smaller type under each line, and nothing is played aloud. If a Spanish speaker needs to hear it, Google Meet, Zoom and Teams can speak translations on some paid plans; the table above has the details.

Can it translate a Zoom or Google Meet call?

Not from this page: it only hears your microphone. The SonicMeet extension translates the call’s own audio and shows the captions on top of Google Meet, Zoom or Teams in Chrome or Edge. The Windows and Mac app does the same for any call app.

Can the Spanish speaker see the translation?

Only on a screen that shows it. Here, turn your phone or laptop toward them. In a call, they install SonicMeet and get Spanish captions on their own screen. Nothing is added to the call, and nobody else has to install anything.

Does it translate both ways at once?

No. It translates one direction at a time: English into Spanish, or Spanish into English after you press the swap button. In a back-and-forth conversation, swap when the other person starts talking.

Which Spanish does it use?

There is one Spanish setting. In our tests the wording leaned Latin American (“costos”, not “costes”), and readers in Spain follow it without trouble.

Does it translate in real time?

Yes. The English appears word by word as it’s spoken, and the Spanish follows a phrase at a time, a moment behind. Each sentence is fully translated within about a second of the speaker finishing it. In the extension and the desktop app you can switch to Accurate, which runs roughly 1 to 5 seconds behind Instant but translates whole sentences.

Is my audio recorded?

No. Audio is sent to SonicMeet and our speech provider to be processed live, and we don’t keep an audio recording.
