Live translation for Discord voice chat, without adding a bot
Discord voice has no captions or translation, and a translator bot only gets in if someone with Manage Server adds it. SonicMeet shows bilingual, real-time captions on your side of any voice channel, DM call or Stage, in the Discord app or in Chrome, and keeps the transcript.

Does Discord have live captions or translation for voice?
No. Not in voice channels, DM calls or Stages, on any Nitro tier. The only route Discord offers is a bot, and someone with Manage Server has to add it.

Discord ships no captions and keeps no record of voice.
There is no caption or translation setting in voice channels, DM calls or Stages, and Nitro doesn't add one. Discord doesn't record voice channels, so there is nothing to read back afterwards. Voice messages are the one recorded thing: up to 20 minutes, sent from the phone app, playable anywhere, never transcribed.
A bot is the only add-on route, and it follows the server's rules.
Translation and transcription bots come from the App Directory. Only the server owner or someone with Manage Server can add one; it then shows up in the member list and has to sit in the voice channel to hear anything. Since March 2026 every call outside Stages is end-to-end encrypted, so a bot must support Discord's DAVE protocol to connect at all. In a server you don't run, or in a DM call, there is nothing you can add yourself.
Which SonicMeet do you need for Discord?
It depends on where you open Discord, not on your server or your Nitro.
Most voice chat
You use the Discord desktop app
Captions the audio your computer plays, so it hears the voice channel the way you do. Nothing changes inside Discord and nothing joins the channel. It also hears your game, so turn the game down while you read.
Captions only the Discord tab, so a game running next to it stays out of the transcript. Discord runs voice chat in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox; the extension runs in Chrome and Edge. On Linux this is the way in: SonicMeet has no Linux app.
If Discord opens in its own window rather than a browser tab, it's the desktop app.

Instant when callouts fly. Accurate when the words matter.
Both on every plan, switchable mid-session from Settings in the caption area.
Default
Instant
Translates as the words arrive, with sub-second delay, so you can react in the flow of the conversation.
Best for: voice channels while you play, casual hangouts, quick calls.
Full-sentence translation
Accurate
Waits for the full sentence and uses a stronger model with far more context, so names, slang and technical terms land right. Runs roughly 1 to 5 seconds behind Instant.
Best for: language practice, community meetings, Stages and anything you'll act on.

Discord voice translation FAQ
Does Discord have live captions or translation in voice channels?
No. Voice channels, DM calls and Stages have no captions, no translation and no transcript, and Nitro doesn't add any. Discord doesn't translate text messages on its own either. SonicMeet captions the voice audio itself in 60+ spoken languages, translates it live, shows both lines, and keeps the transcript.
Do I need to add a bot, or ask a server admin?
No. A translator bot from the App Directory can only be added by the server owner or someone with Manage Server, then shows up in the member list and has to join the voice channel to hear anything. SonicMeet is software on your own computer: it isn't a Discord app, doesn't connect to your account or server, and nobody has to approve it. On a company-managed device, follow your company's rules for installing programs or browser extensions.
Will other people in the voice channel know?
Nothing appears in the channel or the member list, and nothing is posted to any chat. Captions render on your screen only. Audio is processed by SonicMeet and its speech provider in real time, and we don't keep an audio recording. Many servers do have rules against recording; a transcript is close enough that you should tell people, or ask a moderator, before you keep one.
Does it work in servers I don't manage, in DM calls and in Stages?
Yes, all three. SonicMeet only uses what you hear, so it doesn't matter whose server it is, whether it's a one-to-one call, a group DM of up to ten people or a Stage with thousands of muted listeners. Stages are where it helps most: you're in the audience, you can't ask the speaker to slow down, and there are no captions anywhere.
Does it caption what I say, too?
By default it captions what you hear: the other people in the channel. To include your own voice, turn on the microphone option in SonicMeet; push-to-talk in Discord makes no difference, since SonicMeet reads your microphone directly. Most people leave it off and read the room.
What about game audio?
The desktop app hears everything your computer plays, so a loud game or music can drop stray lines into the transcript. Turn the game down while you read, or open discord.com in Chrome or Edge and use the extension instead: it captions only the Discord tab, and a game running next to it stays out.
I stream with Go Live. Will viewers see the captions?
Only if you share the screen they're on. Captions live in a floating window on your desktop: share your entire screen and it's part of the picture; share just the game window and it stays private. SonicMeet never speaks translations aloud and never posts to the channel, so your viewers hear and read exactly what they did before.
Discord desktop app, browser, or Linux?
Windows and Mac: the desktop app captions the Discord app or any browser. If you use Discord in a browser, Discord runs voice chat in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and the SonicMeet extension runs in Chrome and Edge, so use one of those. Linux: SonicMeet has no Linux app, so open discord.com in Chrome or Edge and use the extension. Consoles and phones are the one place it doesn't run.
Can it translate Discord voice messages?
Yes, on your computer. Voice messages are recorded on the phone app, run up to 20 minutes, and can be played on desktop; Discord never transcribes them. Open the chat in the Discord app or in Chrome, start SonicMeet, press play: the translation appears as it plays and stays in your transcript.
Can I use it on my phone?
No. SonicMeet runs on Windows and Mac. Join the voice channel from your computer instead; Discord lets you switch devices any time, and the channel doesn't care which one you're on.
Is it private? Discord calls are end-to-end encrypted.
Discord's encryption protects the call on its way between devices, and since March 2026 that covers every call outside Stages. SonicMeet works after that, on the audio your computer plays: it sends that audio to SonicMeet and its speech provider for real-time processing, and we don't keep an audio recording. So the conversation is no longer only between the people in the channel. If a conversation has to stay that way, don't run SonicMeet, or any other captioning tool, on it.
How accurate is the translation?
Two modes, chosen per session. Instant translates as the words arrive with sub-second delay. Accurate waits for the complete sentence and translates it with a stronger model and far more surrounding context, which makes a visible difference on slang, names and natural phrasing, roughly 1 to 5 seconds behind Instant. Switch from Settings in the caption area at any time.
Is it free?
Yes to start. Install SonicMeet, sign in with Google, and you get a one-time 20 minutes of free captions with both translation modes. Voice channels tend to run long, so treat that as one short session to see it work; paid plans add hours. SonicMeet stops on its own after a few minutes of silence, so an empty channel doesn't eat your time.
