No captions, or captions keep reconnecting
Find what SonicMeet is showing you below. Most cases are a page it isn't allowed to capture, a quiet or muted source, or an unstable network.
The extension won't start on a tab
This tab isn't supported means the browser doesn't let extensions capture that page: browser settings and new-tab pages, other extensions' pages, the Chrome Web Store, and files opened from your computer. Open the meeting or video itself and start there.
If starting fails with Connection Error, the message tells you which case it is:
- Could not show SonicMeet on this tab. Please refresh the page and try again. Refresh the meeting page, then start again.
- Your session expired or could not be verified. Please sign in again and try again. Despite the wording, this can also be a network problem. Check your connection first; if it's fine, log out from the popup's account menu and sign in again.
- Failed to capture tab audio. Please refresh the page and try again. Something is still attached to the tab's audio. Refresh the page and start again.
The panel is open but stays empty
Ready for captions means SonicMeet is connected and waiting for sound.
- Make sure the meeting is actually playing sound and the tab isn't muted. Right-click the tab to check.
- Your own voice isn't part of the tab's audio. If you're the only one speaking, turn on the microphone in the panel; see Captions and translation.
- SonicMeet stays with the tab you started it on. Switching to another tab doesn't move it, and closing that tab ends the session.
- If the source language is set to a language nobody is speaking, captions will be sparse or wrong. Switch to Auto Detect or the right language.
It keeps reconnecting
Retrying and Reconnecting to caption service mean the connection to our caption service dropped. SonicMeet reconnects on its own, but audio during the gap isn't captioned.
- 1Check the network
Frequent drops almost always come from the network path. Company firewalls, proxies and VPNs sometimes cut long-lived connections. Try another network, or turn the VPN off.
- 2Ask for our caption service to be allowed
Live captions use a secure WebSocket connection to
ws.sonicmeet.app. On a managed network, ask for it to be allowed. - 3Read the error, then retry
If Connection error appears: Live captions could not connect. Check your network connection and try again. means SonicMeet gave up after several attempts, so fix the network and click Retry. Live captions are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. means the problem is on our side or there were too many attempts in a short time; wait a few minutes.
Desktop app: no captions
- No audio in the floating window, or Recovering audio… in the main window: the audio went silent or the connection dropped. Check that your computer's sound is on and the meeting plays through your default output device. SonicMeet recovers on its own when it can.
- No system audio detected (Mac): nothing has been heard for about 10 seconds. Click Open permissions and allow SonicMeet to capture system audio, make sure sound plays through the output device selected in System Settings → Sound, then click Check again.
- The connection was lost and couldn't be restored. Start a new session when you're ready. SonicMeet tried to reconnect for about 3 minutes. Check your network, then start again.
- When your computer goes to sleep, SonicMeet stops the session and saves it. Resume capture starts a new session.
Still stuck
Tell us whether you use the extension or the desktop app, which meeting platform, what the panel or window shows, and whether the same thing happens on another network.
Common questions
Do I need to turn on Google Meet's or Zoom's own captions?
No. SonicMeet makes its own captions from the meeting audio, so the meeting app's captions can stay off.
Can I caption two browser tabs at once?
No. The extension captions one tab at a time. Stop the current session first: the popup on any other tab shows a Stop button for it.
Do reconnects use up my minutes?
The gaps between connections don't. While a connection is up, minutes count even if few captions come through, so if reconnects keep happening, stop the session and fix the network rather than letting it run.
